Hey everyone, a quick reminder that “Eat, Drink & be Local” is set to premiere this afternoon on KSBI, channel 52, at 4:30 p.m.
The first stop on the dining tour I’m taking with Rick and Shelby Heath is at Florence’s Restaurant.
Florence and Victoria prepared an authentic Boley, Oklahoma Sunday supper for our special guests. We documented the food and conversation. This afternoon, we invite you to join us at the table.
We were mad lucky with guests. Chef Kurt Fleischfresser of Western Concepts joined us. Kurt has been hanging at The Tasting Room where he just finished a live crawfish boil and has an Omakase class coming on Tuesday that you don’t want to miss. Check the schedule here.
Chef Loretta Barrett Oden from the First American Museum took a place at the table. Loretta not only consults at the FAM, but she just finished a book with University of Oklahoma Press called Corn Dance: Inspired First American Cuisine that’s due this fall.
Loretta’s not the only one with a book coming. Florence and her daughter Victoria Kemp are working on a book about Florence’s with local lawyer/historian/author Bob Burke.
We were also joined by Nic Nicholas and Jovon Bunkley of Nic’s Grill and Nic’s Place Diner and Lounge brought the conversation. Nic never sits still. When he’s not raising goats lately, he’s been working a new line of pies and cakes to bring to the marketplace.
Finally, chef Andrew Black of The Black Walnut, Grey Sweater and The Gilded Acorn took a seat to share his recent experience of meeting Florence for the first time over a country feast. Andrew is, of course, basking in the afterglow of making it as a finalist for Best Chef Southwest by the James Beard Foundation. Best of luck to Andrew. Between him and chef Jeff Chanchaleune of Ma Der, the 405 diningscape has a chance to bring home its second JBA Award, the first for a chef.
Of course, Florence’s was the first restaurant in Oklahoma history to bring home the coveted award considered the Emmy or Oscar for food-service. And that’s big reason why we chose to point our cameras at it first.
Hope you enjoy.
I’ll have a new post Monday evening talking about the film crew in town last week looking to further inflate Oklahoma’s national burger reputation.

The station had some kind of technical issue. Trying to get clarity. Apologies to everyone!
